Nia is adaptable and safe for any fitness level. Every movement can be done within three planes - low, middle and high - and three different levels of intensity. By encouraging students to self-guide and tweak the movement, Nia provides cardiovascular, whole-body conditioning for every body. No matter what your current fitness level, Nia celebrates the current design and function of your body. At the same time, Nia will gradually move you toward the pinnacle of proper physical function.

Since its inception in 1983, Nia has continued to revolutionize the wellness industry with its emphasis on joy as the pathway to finding health and well-being. More than a fitness program, Nia provides conditioning, healing and transformation.

Nia addresses your whole being, not just your body. Nia activates the realms of the body, mind, emotion and spirit. We unite movement with introspection, imagery, expressiveness, and sound to heal the mind, emotions and spirit. Nia students experience a deep sense of satisfaction that keeps them returning for more.

Nia’s foundation is awareness. By tuning into the sensations of the body, Nia teaches you to stop moving in habitual ways and start moving with purpose. By tuning into the structure of the body, Nia teaches you to use the body as it was designed. Awareness of both sensation and structure will help you develop a loving and joyous relationship with your body.

Nia is fun. Practiced barefoot to music, Nia integrates nine movement forms to provide freedom, variety and most of all enjoyment. Nia draws on the wisdom of:

Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Arts: Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais

Tai Chi: The Slow Dance - Tai Chi offers soft, relaxed movement.

The Alexander Technique: organized movement from the top - The Alexander Technique teaches you to change patterned physical responses by focusing primarily on the movement and placement of the head.
